Organ consultant

A life-time’s passionate interest in organ design and history has gone hand in hand with Paul Hale’s development as a player. Over the last thirty or so years this interest has expanded into his appointment as Consultant to numerous significant projects and his work as Diocesan Organ Adviser for Southwell and Lincoln (South). In his twenties he also had ‘hands-on’ experience of organ building, for example at Kidlington Parish Church, Oxford. He has a particular interest in the planning and design of mutations, in mixture compositions, and in console layout.

Paul Hale is an accredited member of the Association of Independent Organ Advisers and has considerable experience of historic restorations, of rebuilding projects and of designing new organs in various styles, each appropriate to the circumstances. He takes special interest in knowing the particular abilities and strengths of leading firms of organ builders at any given time, which enables him to be able to suggest to a client the most appropriate companies for any project. His knowledge and experience extends to digital organs by many makers and to the work of major European and North American organ builders. He has the additional advantage of regularly giving recitals on examples of the work of the world’s most significant craftsmen.

Being based in the Midlands, and now free of the daily duties of a cathedral director of music, he can embrace projects throughout the UK and beyond. He charges by the hour / day and his rates are considered reasonable by his many and varied clients.
